This was an introductory art history class, designed for non-majors. I taught it to 40+ students on multiple occasions. Like Introduction to World Art classes, it is extremely difficult to cover all Asian art in just one semester – this always presented a challenge. I reorganized this class, formerly taught in a primarily chronological\/geographical fashion, to be more thematic in nature. In addition, I included a section called ‘Art Labs,’ where I tried to bring students in close contact with art – even when Asian art was not readily available in Pittsburgh. For example, we drew on our library’s collection of Japanese hand scrolls in facsimile, which provide students with a great chance to see hand scrolls, an unusual art form for most students, in action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
